433 immediately heard shouts and the ringing of the engine room bell from the deck; he proceeded on deck but on account of the noise from wind and rain was unable to hear for some time what had happened. The coxswain reports that Mr. Hutchison awakened by the squall got up suddenly from tř top of the cabin and jumped down in the narrow elley-way between the cabin wall and the gunwale and pitched straight overboard. The gunwale was very low with no guard wire through the stanchions and it was only too easy for a man suddenly awekened by rain to overbalance in this way.
Lifebuoys were throw overboard immediately, the launch was turned and a search kept up till dawn. In the morning a Police launch coming from Castle Peak Bay joined in the search which was however fruitless. The body has never been recovered.
I desire to express the great regret of this Government for the loss of this promising officer who throughout his tenure of office has carried on the best traditions of the Cadet Service in this Colony.
Mrs. Hutchison was in the Colony at the time
of the accident and his relatives were informed of the event direct.
I have the honour to be,
My Lord,
Your Lordship's most obedient,
humble servant,
7.2. Statty.
Governor,&c.
